The lion king of Babylon

Daniel in the Lion's Den - Bible Story Verses & Meaning
I am the king of my people. We're lions. We are servants of the Babylonian tyrant and we do his faithful bidding. He starves us continuously. Our appetites are never satiated. The criminals are thrown into our cave and we devour them mercilessly because it might be our last meal. Some of us fight for our last meal too. I am the most gaunt of all of us here. I must assure that my people are fed first and foremost. I see stronger lions who will fight the weaker of our brethren for the tiniest morsel of food. It is perplexing. We must be humbled for we will never know when we'll be able to eat again.

The tyrant sends us scraps on occasion but they are never enough. I have seen the deaths of countless cubs. It is a cruel life that we must endure. We are slaves to this Babylonian tyrant. Everything I do to keep order seems ineffective. The starvation always outlasts. But I surrender myself for the good of the people. I fight for the lionesses and the cubs. I make certain that the weak are fed first. This is most important. We are herd animals and the herd must stick together.

The tyrant has issued a new edict recently. There is a nation that has been placed as his slaves. The extent of the tyrant's borders know no bounds. This nation ran away from its own God and so he placed them back into the slavery that he initially delivered them from as a punishment. But the tyrant is callously attempting to keep them his slaves permanently. He knows why they are his new subjects. They are his new subjects for their idolatry. They have submitted to other gods and have turned their back on the true God. So the tyrant has always looked for ways to keep them subdued and in a perpetual state of idolatry. He uses brute force in order to do so. Just look at those three young men his predecessor threw into the fiery furnace! Well, that was a really embarrassing moment for the Babylonian Empire but the line of tyrants still has yet to learn this lesson. One wonders if even King Darius understands why he has received the current power over Babylon he has. It was the idolatry of the old Babylonian dynasty that gifted him this power! But the idol of power is too much for him.

My position as king is one of utmost responsibility. It is one these human rulers seem to lack. Power corrupts, but absolute power corrupts absolutely. Isn't that what is said? These kings receive slaves but they never understand the source of their power emanates directly from the Most High God. They continue to trample upon the will of God despite witnessing the grace firsthand themselves! Look at this current edict! What does it say? It is targeted at an incredible adviser to the king too! A Jew. This man prays every single day. And now the king wants to trample on prayer. Does he bother to feed us sufficiently? No. But trampling on prayer to the Most High God is worth more to him. He has criminalized Daniel!

And here he is now, led to us. My people haven't eaten in weeks. We are starved. Hungry. The last criminal was twice as famished as we are! And here comes this innocent, holy man...and...a light! Oh, it fills our once darkened den as this man enters into it! He is thrown into our den and the rock seals it shut as if a tomb. But light fills all around. I have never seen such a light! None of us have! Suddenly, our bellies are beginning to fill. I can see the scrawniest of our herd is now fattening up into a muscular build. His mane is flowing more beautifully than the wildest of the Savannah!

Daniel begins to pray and the angel of the Lord unites to his soul. It harmonizes with us! This is the food we are looking for! This is the food that we shall eat from and never be hungry again. I mew in humility before the great prophet and I rest my head on his knees. I have been humbled into a mere kitten with the entrance of this prophet! I shall lie down with a lamb even! The next morning, the rock is rolled back and Daniel is released from the den. I mew before Daniel one last time. He bends his knee in petition to the Most High God to fill our den with the light most holy from that recently holy night. Never shall my people go hungry again for God has visited us in our den and he is here to stay! Daniel shall leave us but God shall remain with us. We shall miss Daniel severely. This was the night our roaring mouths were shut, we were humbled, and then our bellies, and spirits, were filled with the Spirit of God. The nourishment that will never abandon us even as the tyrant refuses to throw us his scraps!
